  • Dr Darren G. Lilleker

 

 

Dr Darren G. Lilleker is Professor of Political Communication in The Faculty of Media & Communication, Bournemouth University and Convenor of the Centre for Comparative Politics & Media Research. His background combines interests in History, Political Science and Communication and Media. Dr Lilleker’s research interest expertise concerns public engagement in politics, and currently whether public engagement can be facilitated using innovations in communication technology. His research has included the development of a number of tools designed for the analysis of web-based portals and the creation of benchmarks for best practice in online communication. Work around this topic has been presented at a number of major international conferences, including the International Communication Association Annual Conference, as well as events designed for engaging practitioners. He has worked with a number of non-governmental organisations, UK governmental institutions and political parties as a communication advisor, and has been consulted by candidates for election to the national UK parliament and the European parliament. Dr Lilleker recently led a project which analysed the online presences of the European parliament and its elected members as part of the Plan D for Democracy, Dialogue & Debate European Union initiative. Dr Lilleker has published widely on the professionalisation and marketisation of political communication including the textbook Key Concepts in Political Communication (Sage, 2006), and Political Campaigning, Elections and the Internet (Routledge, 2011) and has co-edited The Marketing of Political Parties (MUP, 2006), Voters or Consumers (CSP, 2008) Political Marketing in Comparative Perspective (MUP, 2005) and Political Communication and Cognition (Palgrave, 2014). Dr Lilleker has a strong international profile, has led a number of bids for international networks and workshops, was the UK participant in the CENMEP COST Action, and currently is part of the Campaigning for Strasbourg and Hate international projects. He is Chair of IPSA RC22 Political Communication Section, former Chair of the PSA Political Marketing Specialist Group and has convenor panels on political communication for the ECPR.
