COST Training School 2017


The Training School on Disentangling populism: Reception and effects of populist communicationtook took place between 8 and 12 May, 2017, in SNSPA, and was organized by Professor Nicoleta Corbu, Associate Professor Elena Negrea-Busuioc, and Assistant Professor Raluca Buturoiu.

The Training School aimed to explore the intricacies of populist communication in light of the challenges that the rise of populism throughout Europe poses to mainstream understandings of democracy. As a part of the COST Action IS1308 Populist Political Communication in Europe, this Training School sought to further advance theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of populism research, particularly with respect to reception and effects of populism communication. The School brought together mainly young researchers across Europe, interested in intensive training in populist-related topics and research methodologies. A total number of 17 people from 14 European countries took part in this Training School.

Alongside the 17 trainees, 4 prominent researchers were present at this Training School on topics covering the conceptualization of populist communication, populism and the media, research methods of the populist discourse and the effects of populist communication –Benjamin de Cleen (Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication Studies of the VrijeUniversiteitBrussel, Belgium), Frank Esser (Professor of International and Comparative Media Research at the University of Zurich, Switzerland), Jörg Matthes (Professor of Communication Science at the Department of Communication, University of Vienna, Austria) and Michael Hameleers (Assistant Professor in Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), Amsterdam, The Netherlands).
